Wheels down, Thailand. The unremarkable: touchdown, customs, short-flight, quick-shower, Patong nights. Day 2, the scene is set to explore the pristine sands and sunsets of Phuket, pearl of Thailand's Andaman coast.

Pastel Sunsets

Turning your eyes west to an unspoiled horizon spills its reward in a scintillating climax to the day's activity. The Andaman coast at dusk is something quite particular — the sky goes through every shade between terracotta and pale rose before settling into a soft, bruised violet.

Pearl of the Andaman coast. The beach at midday and the same horizon a few hours later.

Fortuitous Rock Pools

A chance seaside natural rock pool beckons the weary traveller with the promise of a cool respite and a captivating vista. Do not underestimate the calming effects of a quick sunset dip — but look out for exposed oyster shells. They have been known to ruin quite a few happy tourists' days.

The rock pools along the Phuket coastline offer a natural respite — and one of the finest spots to watch the sun disappear into the Andaman Sea.

Speaking of diving in — Day 3 on the open sea.

Day 3 on the Open Sea

A trip to coastal Thailand is incomplete without the cliched yet essential island-hopping boat tours. Set yourself for a day of sun, spray and authentic Thai entertainment. Kick back and enjoy the bumpy ride as the tour guides regale you with their flavour of pop-culture-infused history of the island locals.

A few boat stops along the likes of Ko Phi Phi Don and Ko Phi Phi Le and our trip to the coast concludes — shuttle ride back to the hotel, eyes set on Bangkok.

The iconic limestone karsts of Ko Phi Phi Don and Ko Phi Phi Le — everything the brochure promised and then some.
Maya Bay, Ko Phi Phi Le. Notoriously crowded on a map, unexpectedly serene in person.
