Glimpses of Thailand 2018

A routed service by more than 50 flights a day, getting to our destination from Phuket was no challenge. It did take a good part of the day getting from the airport to our hotel in the heart of Bangkok Old Town, close to the infamous Khaosan Road night market.

Highlights

With only an afternoon to sample the best of Bangkok, we immediately set out for the Phra Nakhon district where we could explore two of Bangkok's largest wat complexes. Wats, in Buddhist culture, denote small temples with a unique characteristic — these temples had enclosing walls which formed a separation from the secular world.

Located on Rattanakosin Island, south of the Grand Palace, stands the Wat Pho complex — housing one of Bangkok's oldest Buddhist temples and several ornate chedis.

On the Thonburi west bank of the Chao Phraya river lies Wat Arun, or the Temple of the Dawn. It is one of the many sites in Thailand where the neighbouring influence of intermingling Asian cultures is most evident. The temple derives its name from Aruna, a Hindu deity worshipped commonly in India, personifying the radiance of the sun.

Buddhist structures at the Wat Arun site are remnants from earlier temples, preserved over several bouts of restoration. The site contains five faience-encrusted prang towers, ranging from 60–80 metres.

A majestic view of the complex's looming central prang.
